New York Congressman Andrew Garbarino slept through the final vote to pass Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill after Congress’ all-night session.
“Andrew Garbarino did not make it in time. He fell asleep in the back, no kidding,” House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed on Thursday, May 22.

Congress went into chamber sessions at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21. The bill wasn’t passed until around 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 22.
“I’m going to just strangle him,” Mike Johnson joked, noting how Andrew Garbarino’s ill-timed nap affected the bill’s total vote count.
“But he’s my dear friend,” the speaker added.
Johnson released a follow-up statement after the incident: “[Garbarino] is highly regarded by me and all our Members as one of the most trusted, reliable, and talented colleagues in the House, and if it were not for his unique contributions and tireless efforts, we simply would not have achieved what we have in this Congress,” he said.

A source from upstate New York told the New York Post that local Republicans were apologetic about Andrew Garbarino “coming across like a buffoon.”
“He’s losing his juice as the most senior congressman,” the source said. “I’m getting calls from party leaders that this guy is disloyal to [Donald] Trump. He was known in the past to be very independent from the party.”

Andrew Garbian’s slip-up inspired memes and left many of Donald Trump’s allies outraged.
“It sounds like a Republican primary challenge is in order,” Trump adviser Roger Stone said. “If Garbarino can’t be bothered to support the president, on what is perhaps the single most significant tax reduction legislation to pass the House since the 1980s, then the President’s supporters can’t be bothered to support Garbarino.”
“Missing the budget vote is a very real concern for me and the local Conservative Party leaders,” State Conservative Party chairman Gerard Kassar noted. “Whatever the reason, it’s a great disappointment.”
Politicians on the other side of the political aisle were also outraged: “It’s just incredible. It’s beyond belief,” Democratic Suffolk County Executive Pat Halpin fired back. “It’s clearly one of the most important votes — whether you’re for it or against it. While Garbarino slept, health care took a huge hit.”

A rep for Andrew Garbarino said in a statement that the politician “stepped out and inadvertently missed the vote.”
“He was present throughout the lead-up to the legislation’s consideration and fully intended to support it,” his office added.

Despite snoozing through votes, Andrew Garbarno played a pivotal role in advocating for Donald Trump’s SALT tax cuts.
“I am proud to have been the leading voice on Long Island during negotiations on this key reconciliation bill,” Garbarino said in a statement. “I fought to lift the cap on SALT and ensure hardworking Long Island families see the benefits of this important legislation.”
“I was moments away from the House floor, to vote ‘yes,’ when the vote was closed. While I am frustrated that the vote was closed before I was able to cast my vote, I am proud of the work we accomplished to deliver huge results for Long Island,” he continued.

Despite his exhaustion, Andrew Garbarino continued to support the bill.
“I congratulate President Trump on getting this bill passed and look forward to voting ‘yes’ when it comes back to the House floor from the Senate,” he shared.
